Sample letter:

Mr. Lucio Gutierrez
PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF ECUADOR

Dear Mr. President

Recently, I have received very worrying news
from your country, particularly regarding the
situation of the human rights of the
communities in the petrol blocks 23 and 24.

Specifically, the governor of the province of
Pastaza, Mr. Fernando Ordo?ez, has pronounced
himself in the press, stating the the
Government is ready to use force in order to
assure the petrol activity in spite of the
resistance on part of the indigenous
communities.

I remind you that the Sarayacu community, as a
direct consequence of the presence of the
petrol company CGC in the block 23, has been
subject to grave abuses of their human rights,
such as death threats, attempt of murder,
torture and rape threats. Moreover, there are
judicial decisions, on national and
international level, that protect the rights of
the indigenous people of the region.

Because of all this, and as You are the highest
authority of your country, I urge you to assure
that the judicial decisons at national and
international level, that protect the indigenous
people of the region, are respected. Also, in
order to guarantee the peace and tranquility in
the region, I ask you to dismiss the Governor
Mr. Fernando Ordo?ez, for having pronounced this
type of threats against the indigenous people.

Sincerely,
