CSD General
Information
“Sustainable Development,” as defined by the 1987 Brundtland
Report of the World Commission on Environment and Development, is
“development that meets the needs of the present without compromising
the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”
The UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) is responsible for
ensuring effective follow-up on agreements reached at the 1992 UN
Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED)/Earth Summit in Rio
de Janeiro, Brazil. A 53-member Commission of the UN Economic and
Social Council, the CSD is also responsible for coordinating
activities of other UN bodies with regard to sustainable development,
and for promoting implementation of “Agenda 21,” the Earth Summit plan
for achieving sustainable development in the 21st century.
The CSD includes the participation of Indigenous Peoples as a “Major
Group” formally recognized in Agenda 21 as having unique relationships
to their lands, ecosystems and natural resources. While the CSD
limits itself to economic, social and environmental criteria to
monitor sustainable development, Indigenous Peoples have consistently
promoted the inclusion of cultural criteria, spiritual rights and
self-determination. The Indigenous Peoples Caucus to the CSD has
participated actively in each CSD session, and is now preparing for
the World Summit on Sustainable Development/Rio+10.
