"SHOUT OUR CRY: LAND AND DIGNITY!"

APPEAL LAUNCHED FOR A MASS MARCH FOR FOOD SOVEREIGNTY TO BE HELD IN ROME, ITALY, ON 8 JUNE 2002

FARMERS, INDIGENOUS PEOPLES AND WORKERS' LEADERS WHO HAVE ENDED UP IN JAIL FOR DEFENDING THEIR RIGHTS AND THOSE OF THE POOR ASK THE INTERNATIONAL CIVIL SOCIETY TO TAKE ACTION FOR FOOD SOVEREIGNTY

"We strongly want to sustain our thousand days of resistance, the thousands of voices that  are crying out from each corner of the world to give courage and spirit to our hopes. For this we ask you to march in the streets of Rome on 8 June 2002, upholding our causes and shouting our cry: land and dignity!".

Thirty-three amongst farmers, indigenous peoples and workers' leaders, imprisoned in jail for giving voice to the hopes of the world's poor and miserable, launched an appeal calling for the international civil society to take action in a mass march to be held in the streets of Rome, Italy, on the 8th of June 2002, on the eve of the FAO World Food Summit: five years later and of the parallel Forum for Food Sovereignty. The call comes from behind the bars of a number of prisons all over the world, from Brazil to the Philippines, from Indonesia to Bangladesh. It demands the following: a diversified, farmer-based, sustainable production; adequate prices, rewarding agricultural workers, often forced to work in slavery-like conditions, in a fair way; a new launch of fair agrarian reform programmes, one of the most efficient ways of helping rural development; the WTO (World Trade Organization) out of food and agriculture, because food cannot be treated such as any other commodity; an international moratorium on GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms), which have dangerous consequences for the health and the environment as well as for agriculture and access to food.

All these issues will also be the core of the Forum for Food Sovereignty, which will gather hundreds of members of various movements, NGOs (Non Governmental Organizations) and CSOs (Civil Society Organizations) coming from all over the world, in Rome's Palazzo dei Congressi from 9 to 13 June 2002. While western governments find it hard to tackle the significant changes marking the current historical period, and keep on applying old models of interpretation to a fast-changing reality, the Forum for Food Sovereignty, thanks to the great experience of all its members, wants to bring forward alternative proposals able to change our future for the better.

MOVEMENTS, NGOs, CSOs, ASSOCIATIONS AND OTHER REALITIES OF THE CIVIL SOCIETY THAT WANT TO ADHERE TO THE 8 JUNE MARCH FOR FOOD SOVEREIGNTY HAVE TO SEND AN E-MAIL TO THE ADDRESS: MARCH8JUNE@LIBERO.IT

"LLEVAR ALTO NUESTRO GRITO: TIERRA Y DIGNIDAD"

LOS MOVIMIENTOS, LAS ONGs Y LAS ASOCIACIONES QUE DESEEN ADHERIRSE A LA MARCHA POR LA SOBERANIA ALIMENTARIA DEBEN ENVIAR SU MENSAJE A: MARCH8JUNE@LIBERO.IT
